CHANNAHON — The village board voted to approve ordering a new semi-permanent speed radar sign to replace one damaged by a vehicle this past winter.

The village will not have to pay for the cost, estimated at $7,114, as it will be paid for privately.

The sign has been on Navajo Drive. A similar one is on Bell Road on the southwest side of town.

Trustee Debbie Militello, however asked staff if the opportunity could be taken to move the sign to another location. There are many other areas of the village that could use the radar, she said.

“I think it’s time to move things around,” she said. “I think there are other streets that need it just as much.”

Village President Joe Cook suggested the village purchase the replacement sign, then decide where to place it.

Police Chief Joe Pena asked trustees to send him location ideas, so he could look at past traffic surveys for those streets.

Village Administrator Jamie Bowden reminded the board that it had previously discussed purchasing another mobile radar sign in addition to the one the village already owns and uses frequently.

Bowden said a mobile radar could be moved as much as needed from one street to another just by pulling it on its trailer. The board approved the semi-permanent sign replacement and might discuss purchasing another mobile unit at a future meeting.
