JOLIET — A mail carrier kept credit cards she was supposed to deliver, police say, and her husband used them to buy auto parts, video games and wigs.
Chinita A. Liggins, 31, and her husband, Tillman Liggins, 42, were arrested at 1:45 p.m. Monday at their home, at 1700 Coyote Ridge Court.
“This case was a joint investigation between the department and the postal inspection service,” Sgt. Joe Egizio said.
The couple have been charged with conspiracy to commit identity theft and nine counts of identity theft.
The investigation started when postal inspectors discovered several residents along Chinita Liggins’ route never received credit cards they were expecting in the past few months, Egizio said.
“She would keep them and turned them over to her husband, who would use them at local businesses,” he said.
Because Tillman Liggins allegedly went into a store with the intent to steal, the Will County State’s Attorney’s office has also charged him with burglary.
Detectives obtained arrest and search warrants Monday.
According to reports, police seized a video game with a receipt attached and bags containing approximately 10 women’s wigs. The Liggins live in the portion of Joliet that has Plainfield mailing addresses.
The Liggins were being held in the county jail, Chinita Liggins on $75,000 bond and Tillman Liggins on $100,000 bond. Both had “unemployed” listed as their occupation on the county jail’s log Tuesday.
