JOLIET — A landlord whose rental house was shut down by the city of Joliet early this month could be renting again in February.

Two tenants had to move out of the house at 435 W. Marion St. when the city took away landlord John Pochodenko’s certificate of inspection. Police said Pochodenko ignored requirements that he attend landlord training and take other measures aimed at avoiding a past situation in which a number of disturbances, including a shooting, had occurred at the house.

The Herald-News wrote about the plight of Charlie Turnbaugh and his family, who moved into the house after the problems occurred but had to leave anyway and were scrambling to scrape up the cash to pay a deposit on a new apartment.

Pochodenko now has attended landlord training and will take the measures required by the city, including background checks and leases for tenants, Joyce Sallese with the city’s Neighborhood Services Department said last week.

Sallese said a building inspection will be conducted before a new certificate of inspection is issued. But the process could be completed in time for the house to be rented again in February.

At the time Turnbaugh was forced to leave the apartment, he also was laid off from his job. Two other adult members of the household also were out of work. The family ended up leaving Joliet and going to the Arcola area to move in with a relative.

Pochodenko could not be reached for comment.
