A Bolingbrook man was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for stabbing a Romeoville man more than 20 times in November 2009.
Ryan L. Kozak, 23, pleaded guilty in October to three counts of aggravated battery. Prosecutors said he and 32-year-old David O’Meara of Romeoville attacked Adam Roser in his home after a fight at a bar.
Before his sentencing Tuesday, Kozak told Will County Judge Edward Burmila he’s a “hard-working, law-abiding American citizen” — not a criminal.
He and his defense attorney, Ricardo Munoz, claimed Roser threatened them with what appeared to be a gun. Police found a plastic toy gun in Roser’s home.
“I did everything in my power to defend us that night,” Kozak said.
Prosecutors noted Kozak was serving probation from a drug case at the time of Roser’s stabbing. They also said Roser declined to appear in court for the sentencing hearing.
O’Meara already landed a six-year prison sentence for the attack on Roser, court records show. He pleaded guilty in November to aggravated battery.
