Crash kills Bolingbrook driver

BOLINGBROOK — A man has been arrested on DUI charges after a crash that killed another driver Friday night.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. as Effren Garcia, 30, was attempting to turn from Rockhurst Road onto Monterey Drive. A 1996 Jeep driven by Jay V. Cox, 35, struck Garcia’s 1994 Nissan, Lt. Mike Rompa said.

“It appears both units were eastbound when Garcia turned left and was struck by Cox on the driver’s side,” Rompa said. “The SUV then hit a lightpole, knocked it over and then flipped onto its roof.”

According to reports, Garcia was not wearing a seat belt but Cox was.

Garcia, a Bolingbrook resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:25 a.m.

Cox, of 251 Meadowbrook Drive, was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and later released. He was then arrested on charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane usage.

Kristin L. Pepper: 25, of 17224 S. 70th Ave. in Tinley Park, was arrested by Mokena police and booked into the county jail Saturday on a charge of aggravated battery.

Brooke A. Garner: 21, of 213 N. Main St. in Wilmington, was arrested by Wilmington police and booked into the county jail Saturday on charges of narcotics possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

William B. Moton: 48, of 101 Hunter Ave. in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Saturday on charges of driving on a suspended license and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Miguel Antonino: 20, of 21011 Siegel Drive in Crest Hill, was arrested by Bolingbrook police and booked into the county jail Sunday on charges of aggravated battery and vandalism.

Cristian E. Avalos-Merino: 29, of 1309 E. Cass St. in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Sunday on charges of aggravated battery, driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Tracy W. Thompson: 49, of 2109 Woodview Court in Wilmington, was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Sunday on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
