Police Blotter: Police nab stolen SUV after chase

Updated: May 19, 2012 8:08AM

JOLIET — An officer reportedly watched the driver of a stolen sport utility vehicle roll through a stop sign Monday afternoon and commit several other traffic violations during the ensuing chase.

About 3 p.m., Officer Dave Martis was stationed near Fourth Avenue and Sherman Street to ensure the stop sign was obeyed when a blue 2005 Chervrolet Tahoe failed to stop, Cmdr. Al Roechner said. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Crest Hill earlier in the day.

“Officer Martis activated lights and sirens and caught up with the SUV on Chicago Street where the driver let a female passenger out of the vehicle and took off at a high rate of speed,” Roechner said.

The suspected driver, Jaelyn D. Gant, 18, then ran another stop sign and cut in front of a vehicle on Osgood Street before stopping the Tahoe and running to the 200 block of Lincoln Street, Roechner said. After being caught by officers Terry Higgins and Frank Wascher, Gant, of 1016 Highland Ave., was booked into the county jail on charges of motor vehicle theft, attempting to flee from police and driving on a suspended license.
