Three young people were killed Monday when their car and a semi-trailer truck collided around 3:15 p.m. at Route 126 and Schlapp Road in southern Kendall County.
State Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that the driver and two passengers of the car were killed when the car either failed to stop completely at the stop sign on Schlapp Road, or stopped and then rolled forward. There were no survivors in the car.
Police identified the victims as driver Brian Herrera, 19, of Plainfield, and passengers Tyler Montgomery, 19, of Plainfield, and Alexis Banuelos, 18, of Naperville.
The driver of the semi tractor-trailer, Scott Fernatt, 45, of Hodgkins, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was rerouted as police shut down a stretch of Route 126 to investigate. The highway was still closed at 9:30 p.m. The truck’s trailer was filled with sandbags, and clearing the wreckage was difficult, police said.
