State investigating neglect allegation in Joliet baby’s death

Updated: June 6, 2012 10:36PM

A Joliet mother who previously faced neglect and abuse allegations involving her children is again being investigated for alleged neglect, this time in connection with the death of her infant son.

Daejon Fields, 13 months, lived in the 400 block of South Joliet Street in Joliet, and was pronounced dead at Children’s Memorial Hospital at 4:26 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of neglect against the boy’s mother in connection with his death, DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.

The agency previously substantiated allegations of abuse and neglect against the mother in two other cases, in 2008 and 2009, Marlowe said. He declined to say whether other children still live in the home.

Joliet police had no immediate information on the child’s death.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
