A Joliet man remains in jail on $5 million bond in connection with the shootings of two people in Aurora in 2009.
Jose R. Sosa, 24, of the 16800 block of South Broadway Street in Joliet, is charged with two counts each of felony attempted first-degree murder and felony aggravated battery with a firearm. He remains in jail on $5 million bond and will next be in court Aug. 2.
Sosa’s co-defendant, Joel A. Zapta, 22, of the 900 block of Assell Avenue in Aurora, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of felony attempted first-degree murder and was sentenced to 32 years in prison, according to a release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence.
Zapata fired a .38-caliber handgun at two men who exited a car about 12:30 p.m. May 21, 2009, in the 1000 block of Elliot Avenue in Aurora, the release said. Both men were struck but suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Zapta was given credit for at least 634 days served in Kane County Jail, where he had been held on $750,000 bond, the release said.
