U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, on Monday denounced the mock “groundbreaking” for the Peotone airport over the weekend.
Kinzinger was joined by Will County Board Member Cory Singer in calling the Saturday “groundbreaking” hosted by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson a “stunt” aimed at bypassing the state process for setting up the airport.
“As a member of Congress, I know that we have no direct control over the process — that is a state issue,” Kinzinger said in a media conference call. “Jackson has used his position to create this notion of perceived power to try to bypass the state process that he couldn’t control.”
The so-called groundbreaking was actually a rally organized by Jackson who wants to bring in private developers to finance the airport. Will County officials have opposed the Jackson plan, saying it takes control of the future airport away from local government.
