Troy School Board OKs summer reading program

JOLIET — A pilot summer reading program will give participating Troy School District students an opportunity to gain access to one or more of the school libraries during the summer.
The program, recently approved by the Troy School Board, will run from June 18 through July 31.
The William B. Orenic Intermediate School library will be open Tuesday and Thursday; the Troy Heritage Trail School Library will be open Monday; and the Troy Shorewood School library will be open Wednesday.
The cost of the program includes book bags/books, $2,000; stipends, $2,400; and supplies, incentives and replacement books, $1,500.
The board also accepted the resignation of Joanne Schochat, assistant superintendent for human resources and general counsel, effective June 30.
Schochat has served the district since July, 2000. She has accepted the same position with Oak Park School District.
In other business, the board had the first reading of a new proposed board policy prohibiting bullying.
Schochat said Illinois law requires every public and non-public school in the state to adopt a policy prohibiting bullying.
It was also reported that Schochat has been conducting exit interviews of employees who are separating from employment with the district. In accordance with Troy’s Strategic Plan, this is one of the efforts to engage in continuous improvement.
The data is shared with administration.
After voicing concern over the future of state funding for schools, the board voted not to approve hiring three temporary math specialists. The cost over two years would have been $300,000.
