OpenLine: Vote on the issues

Updated: July 11, 2012 6:06AM

Too many people do not vote, and too many who do vote don’t have a clue. People should not vote for a person because of a television ad, what their religious leader says or by their party. It’s a voter’s duty to learn about the issues just like the rest of the world.

Don’t pass judgment

I have walked in the morning and evening on the East Side of Joliet and have had no problems. But I have been arm-robbed on the West Side of Joliet. Joliet is an East Side/West Side kind of town. There is good and bad on both sides of this town.

Rice and beans are enough

What’s wrong with rice and beans? My family was poor and had oatmeal three times per day and often had to split a can of soup between seven people. We lived to talk about it. The difference between then and now is that we were taught to thank God for what we had and not whine or covet what others had. I know that people need food. That is why we give food to pantries and the poor. We give from the heart because it’s what God wants us to do and not because it’s mandated by the government.

Scheidt creating jobs

I was very upset after reading about the protests of John Scheidt looking to build the detention center for illegal immigrants. Not once did I read that Mr. Scheidt did or did not back the illegal immigrants in this country. He is simply trying to create work for his carpenters and the other trades in the area.

Corporate greed to blame

President Obama has not hurt the middle class. Is Obama at fault for what is happening to the Caterpillar employees in Joliet, or is it corporate greed that has pushed and pushed on the American people?

Illinois a lousy state

A headline reads, “Illinois House OKs ‘quick-take’ plan for highway” (May 25). Here we go again. They can walk in and do what they want. Reports show $9 million has been allocated to study the project. Gov. Quinn is allocating money for studies yet AARP is requesting help to keep from losing medical coverage for those in need. Illinois is turning out to be a lousy state. I am seriously thinking about selling my home and moving out of Illinois. There is no quality of life here in Illinois.

Don’t complain about train

If the train tracks were there before you moved in, then you have nothing to complain about.

Show good sportsmanship

A terrible fight broke out between the St. Rita and St. Lawrence baseball teams after a collision between a runner and the first baseman. There is no excuse for fighting in high school sports. The two coaches continued a very serious verbal confrontation. They almost encited a riot with their lack of professionalism and lack of sportsmanship. Very little common sense was shown. They clearly were not role models in this situation. They each should be very apologetic for their actions.
