Letters: There’s more

I wanted to write to praise the letter by Karl Breckenridge, but also to make an addendum. In the letter, “Our wallets are lighter” (Jan. 13), Breckinridge mentions that Mayor Tom Girrante and Councilmembers John Gerl, Don Fisher and Mike Turk have voted to sharply increase Joliet’s sales, electricity, telecommunications and natural gas taxes in addition to increases in ambulance and garbage rates. However, he left out a few.
Property taxes were also raised not long ago and a new tax was imposed on Joliet subscribers of Comcast and AT&T; the latter being used to finance the costly renovation of City Hall.
With the economic situation being what it is, these repeated tax hikes reflect a measure of irresponsibility on the part of the city government. I certainly think it is important that people be made aware of what is going on in Joliet, and thank Breckinridge for his contribution.
