Bowling: Channahon Lanes maintains city lead

Standings have been released after the second weekend of the 72nd USBC BA Joliet Area City Tournament at AMF Lanes Bolingbrook.

Here are the leaders with one week remaining, including Channahon Lanes maintaining its hold on first place in the Team division.

Team: 1. Channahon Lanes 3,525, 2. Rack Rippers 3,521, 3. Town & Country VI 3,517, 4. Team AMF #2 3,515, 5. Strike Shop #3 3,427.

Doubles: 1. Michael Benson-Brian Benson 1,545, 2. James Condon-Paul Bjekich 1,524, 3. Tanya Austin-Ben Cunningham 1,483, 4. Ryan McDaniel-Kevin Fuchs 1,469, 5. Bill Benson-Steve Benson 1,447.

Singles: 1. Don Stubel 781, 2. Stefan Lee 769, 3. Chuck Loose 767, 4. Paul Allen 765, 5. Steve Benson 760.

All Events: 1. Brian Benson 2,241, 2. Michael Benson 2,197, 3. Ray Kochevar 2,186, 4. Stefan Lee 2,177, 5. Andr’e Gaines 2,174.

Scratch Division Leaders: Team — Town & Country VI 3,414; Doubles — Jeff Pickett-Mario Medved 1,398; Singles — Don Strubel 764; All Events — Dan Bachar 2,170.

Marty Ballak, Scot Hardesty, Mario Medved and Chris Watson have bowled 300 games in the tournament.

Slammers sign three

The Joliet Slammers announced the signing of pitchers James Schult, Chase Doremus and Chris Sobota.

Schult, an Eastern Connecticut State alum, spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals.

Doremus comes to the Slammers from Dickinson State University. He struck out 55 while walking 17 in 2010.

Sobota worked out for the Slammers last year in Avon, Ohio. The Penn State alum has impressive velocity on his fastball, according to the Slammers.

Providence signings

Led by All-State lineman Ryan Ward, who will move on to Iowa, several Providence football players recently announced their college choices.

Lineman Charles Barth will play for Western Michigan. Defensive lineman Nick Cemeno is moving on to NAIA national champion St. Xavier.

Lineman Zac Morgan, who also wrestled for the Celtics, will play football at Dayton. Defensive back Troy Sheppard will attend Northwestern. Tight end Mitch Vejvoda will continue his career at South Dakota State.

Soccer player Eileen Kenny signed a National Letter of Intent with Illinois-Springfield.
