Aremka was the Class 3A state runner-up in the high jump last season, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Aremka will attend Drake University in the fall.

Why Drake University?

They were in need of some high jumpers, and they also have the pharmacy program I’m really interested in. It seemed to be a real good fit.

Have you been to the Drake Relays?

I went last year to watch. I’m heading down there again this year. Hopefully, next year you might see me in them.

Describe how the state meet went last year.

My goal was at least to get on the podium. Then I found out I was the second-place person on the podium. It was just a crazy experience.

What height do you want to reach?

I cleared 5-7 last year. I had really wanted 5-9. I have not reached 5-9 yet, so that is my ongoing goal for hopefully the end of the season. I really want to jump state qualifying (5-3) every meet. So far I have.

What are team goals this season?

The conference championship would be really nice. I’m hoping this year we’ll have a couple of more girls go to state and improve on our 13th-place finish. We have a couple of new coaches. With new coaches comes new techniques. ... I think it’s definitely helping us.

If not track, would you be in a different sport?

I don’t think so. I love track. I run cross country in the fall to cross train, to stay in shape for track.

What will you remember most about Plainfield North?

Definitely state. That was a lot of fun. I made a lot of friends here. We’ve had so much fun over the years, even just at practice.

Who’s the one person you’d like to have a conversation with?

It would definitely be my great grandma. She was always really supportive with everyone in my family. She passed away even before I started track. She would be really proud of me.

As told to Tim Tierney
