Girls Soccer: Plainfield Central defeats Plainfield South

The crack of the bat or the voice of the announcer from the nearby baseball game could be heard during the girls soccer match Tuesday between Plainfield South and host Plainfield Central.
Those noises didn’t become much of a distraction to Central’s Britney Lenza. The senior forward scored with 17 seconds left before halftime and again 16 seconds into the second half in the Wildcats’ 2-1 Southwest Prairie Conference victory.
The first goal came after a pass from Brigid Hanley sprung Lenza on a breakaway.
“Brigid had an amazing ball and I just chased after it,’’ Lenza said. “I anticipated it about 10 seconds before. I was like ‘I really hope Brigid kicks it up because I’m ready.’ And she did.’’
“We let one pass beat the four defenders in the back,’’ South coach Kevin Allen said. “We were trying to push forward and get one right before half. One pass can’t beat four girls. We fell asleep.’’
Lenza gave Central (9-4-1, 3-1) a 2-0 lead with an assist from Paige Fuller barely after the second half was under way.
“Paige just split right through the defenders and I ran onto it,’’ Lenza said. “The goalie stopped it, but it bounced off her and I kicked it in.’’
“I’m thinking we’re going to go in tied 0-0 at halftime, and when the second half is just starting we’re up 2-0,’’ Central coach Ken Schoen said. “It’s definitely nice to play from a lead.’’
Rachel Boros scored for Plainfield South (4-7, 1-2) to make it 2-1 midway through the second half.
“The thing that’s the most frustrating is we outplayed them for 78 minutes and had the better run of play and had better shots on goal,’’ Allen said.
“Their ’keeper made a heckuva save late. We just didn’t put our chances away.’’
Central goalkeeper Tiffany Lenza, Britney’s younger sister, made a few close-in saves within the last 10 to 15 minutes of the game.
“She definitely did have a couple huge saves,’’ Schoen said. “She kept us in the lead. She’s definitely come a long way in the season so far.’’
