A role player on Homewood-Flossmoor’s state-qualifying teams the past two seasons, Tess Adamonis knew she’d have to play a bigger role if the Vikings were going to have similar success this year.
Adamonis was up to the challenge Tuesday, scoring a team-high three goals, including the game-tying score in the final minute of regulation and the game winner in the host Vikings’ 8-7 overtime win over Lincoln-Way Central in a battle for the SouthWest Suburban Blue lead.
“It felt good to step up and help my team in such a big game,” Adamonis said. “Central is a big rival for us, and we want to win conference because saying you’re conference champions has a nice ring to it.”
Rebecca Mathews and Anna Tenny added two goals each and Annie Schloen scored once for H-F (16-9, 9-1), which avenged an earlier 7-6 loss to the Knights.
Danijela Jackovich paced Central (16-6, 8-2) with six goals.
Jackovich’s goal early in the fourth capped a 3-0 run and gave the Knights a 7-6 lead before Adamonis’ goal on the power play tied it with 43 seconds left.
Both teams were blanked in the first overtime, but Central suffered a big blow when Jackovich fouled out. Adamonis tucked a shot inside the post for the deciding goal with 2:35 left. She then made a clinching steal in the closing seconds.
“It was supposed to be (Jackovich) against (Mathews) — Godzilla vs. King Kong,” H-F coach Pat Duignan said. “But it came down to who else could step up and Tess and (Tenny) did great.”
H-F can clinch its third straight conference title with wins in its final three games.
Anna Shirer made nine saves for the Vikings.
Michelle Dundek had a goal and Caroline Foglton five saves for Central.
“It was an exciting game and both teams played terrific,” Central coach Karen Desruisseaux said. “We hope we see them again in sectionals for a tiebreaker.”
