Lincoln-Way co-op made sure it would have a chance to defend its state title next weekend, handily winning the Lincoln-Way East Sectional Thursday night with 154.25 points.

Ajani Cargle, the defending all-around state champion, led the way for the winners, registering a meet-best 56.35 in the all-around. He won pommel horse with a 9.65, still rings and vault with a 9.55 on each and parallel bars with a 9.7.

“I made a couple of mistakes, but other than that I did pretty well,” Cargle said. “Hopefully, we can come ready next week.”

Also for Lincoln-Way co-op, Victor Valencia added a 9.6 on floor, Bret Arias had a 9.15 on vault, Zach Beecher scored an 8.15 on pommel horse and Brent Schneider offered an 8 on horizontal bar. The four gymnasts also had at least one additional counting score for the winners.

“We stayed on our feet, got the score we needed to have and left here healthy,” Lincoln-Way co-op coach Skip Adamson said. “For some of them this was their first state series, so there were some jitters, but they’ll be OK.”

Hinsdale Central finished in second place with a 147.8 and put itself in a strong position to land one of the three at-large qualifiers. For now, the Red Devils, who were led by all-around Tyler Leahy’s 51.7, will have to sit and wait until late Saturday night.

Neuqua Valley’s Andrew Fairbanks won the horizontal bar with an 8.35, while Homewood-Flossmoor senior Corey Bell had the top score of the sectional, winning the floor exercise with a 9.75.

“It was real good, I mean, I’m real stoked with it,” Bell said. “It’s my first year of doing gymnastics but I’m really cool with going into state with it.”
