Lincoln-Way East senior-to-be Matt Stoner withstood the weather and a tight leaderboard last week to capture the boys title at the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour’s Championship at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.

Entering the final round, Stoner and South Bend, Ind.’s, Michael Makris shared the lead, with seven other players within five shots.

Stoner fired a final-round 77 to finish at 15-over 231. Makris was second at 234.

“I just really focused my mind-set: ‘Don’t go after him, we’ll both falter eventually,’ ” Stoner said in a news release from the MAJGT. “I just made a few more putts than him and it turned out my way.”

Stoner’s back-nine 37 erased a two-stroke deficit and earned him his first win on the tour. His previous best finish was a tie for 16th at the Aberdeen Classic.

With the 360 points he earned for the win, Stoner moved into a tie for seventh in the MAJGT Player of the Year standings.
