JOLIET WEST (1-0) at PLAINFIELD SOUTH (0-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: Joliet West was impressive last week in blanking Thornridge 48-0, albeit against a rather weak opponent. Plainfield South had the opposite experience, dropping a 33-6 decision to mighty Bolingbrook. Which sort of beginning does a team more good in Week 2? South won last year 26-8 in a weather-plagued battle that began Saturday and ended Monday morning.

LOCKPORT (0-1) at PLAINFIELD NORTH (0-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: Two teams that fancy themselves with playoff potential need a victory with conference play beginning next week. Lockport had difficulty getting its offense on track in last week’s 27-7 loss at Downers Grove North. Plainfield North, featuring RB Jay Roberts and QB Kurt Palandech, suffered a tough 27-22 loss at Bradley.

LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL (1-0) at LINCOLN-WAY WEST (0-1)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: West coach Dave Ernst faced a tough assignment for his debut as the Warriors fell at Sycamore 19-13. Central escaped Lincoln-Way North 28-27 in overtime as the Knights’ defense stopped the 2-point conversion that could have won the game for North. This is the Herald-News Game of the Week.

BOLINGBROOK (1-0) at ROMEOVILLE (0-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: With the incomparable Aaron Bailey at quarterback, Bolingbrook is No. 1 in the Herald-News and No. 1 in the state in The Associated Press Class 8A poll. Romeoville fell 39-0 last week to Hinsdale South. This shapes up as the classic mismatch, or as a war between Valley View District rivals where the records and press clippings mean nothing.

ROBESON (1-0) at JOLIET CATHOLIC (0-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium

The breakdown: Joliet Catholic WB Ty Isaac left last week’s 40-34 loss to Providence late in the first quarter with a shoulder injury that was reported in the Sun-Times as “minimal tears to several ligaments.” He is out. Robeson RB Devon Sanders, who has an offer from Purdue, could help keep this one interesting. The No. 4 Hilltoppers are No. 3 in The Associated Press Class 5A state poll.

RICHARDS (1-0) at MORRIS (1-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: No. 6 Morris, which is No. 2 in The Associated Press Class 5A state poll, beat Minooka 14-6 last week and faces another huge challenge in Richards, No. 10 in 6A by the AP. Richards beat Harlan 26-0 last week. But last season, Morris traveled to Richards and won 28-16.

JOLIET CENTRAL (0-1) at REAVIS (1-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The rundown: Those waiting for Joliet Central to score its first victory since the return to separate programs in 2010 may be excited about the possibilities here. Though beating Solorio, a new Chicago Public League school, 56-24 last week, Reavis won one game over the two previous seasons. Central competed in a 24-14 loss to Rich Central last week.

ST. CHARLES NORTH (0-1) at PLAINFIELD CENTRAL (1-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: St. Charles North opened with a 30-0 loss to Hinsdale Central while Plainfield Central had its way with Amundsen 42-7. The Wildcats’ running game, featuring Jordan Ellingwood, Gino Giarratano and Tyler Erdman, may present a problem for the North Stars.

PLAINFIELD EAST (0-1) at BATAVIA (1-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The breakdown: While Plainfield East dropped a 24-22 decision to Metea Valley last week despite two Jacob Potopka touchdown passes, Batavia slipped past Glenbard North 42-41. That win earned Batavia the No. 9 spot in The Associated Press Class 7A state poll.

RIVERSIDE-BROOKFIELD (0-1) at LEMONT (1-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

The rundown: No. 5 Lemont, which is No. 3 in The Associated Press Class 6A state poll, laid the usual number on Little Village 56-0 last week. Riverside-Brookfield was on the short end of a 57-12 thumping against Wheaton St. Francis. More of the same may be in the offing for both sides.
