Week 3 High School Capsule Football Previews

Updated: October 9, 2012 2:23PM

OSWEGO (1-1) at NO. 10 MINOOKA (0-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Waubonsie Valley 54, Oswego 28; Providence 28, Minooka 10

The breakdown: Last season, Minooka missed a shot at an undefeated Southwest Prairie season when the Indians lost at Oswego 21-7 in Week 9. This season, the two title contenders square off to open league play. Minooka has come up short against two tough opponents, Morris and Providence, under first-year coach Paul Forsythe. Oswego features a high-powered offense.

OSWEGO EAST (2-0) at PLAINFIELD EAST (0-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Oswego East 31, Oak Lawn 6; Batavia 30, Plainfield East 14

The breakdown: Oswego East has not played anywhere near the competition Plainfield East has faced in the first two weeks, so the Bengals are hoping to get the Southwest Prairie portion of the schedule off on the right foot. The Bengals, who beat Oswego East 27-0 to conclude the 2011 season, gave powerful Batavia a good run last week. Aris Izarray provided a highlight with an 85-yard kickoff return.

PLAINFIELD SOUTH (1-1) at PLAINFIELD NORTH (1-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Plainfield South 31, Joliet West 27; Plainfield North 35, Lockport 2

The breakdown: Two teams hoping to be involved in the Southwest Prairie title chase meet in the conference opener. South beat North 27-7 last year in Week 9, earning a playoff berth while North was eliminated. Tigers QB Kurt Palandech passed for 150 yards and rushed for 107 last week against Lockport.

ROMEOVILLE (0-2) at PLAINFIELD CENTRAL (2-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Bolingbrook 46, Romeoville 10; Plainfield Central 14, St. Charles North 10

The breakdown: Romeoville was the spoil sport in 2011, finishing the season with a last-minute 49-46 victory over Plainfield Central that knocked the Wildcats from the playoffs. WR Duvaun Goodlow caught seven passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, for the Spartans. Soon after, his family moved and he transferred to Central. So he will be facing his old friends.

JOLIET WEST (1-1) at SANDBURG (2-0)

Kickoff: 7:15 p.m. Friday

Last week: Plainfield South 31, Joliet West 27; Sandburg 54, Stagg 7

The breakdown: If this SouthWest Suburban Blue opener is anything like the battle last year at Ray Klootwyk Field, get ready for a great one. Sandburg survived 35-28, but it easily could have gone either way. The West defense must step up against Sandburg RB Lemonte Booker.

NO. 2 LINCOLN-WAY EAST (2-0) at LOCKPORT (0-2)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Lincoln-Way East 20, Montini 14; Plainfield North 35, Lockport 2

The breakdown: The Herald-News Game of the Week, this SouthWest Suburban Blue opener is a bit of a mismatch if you base your assumptions on the results to date. While No. 2 Lincoln-Way East, led by QB Tom Fuessel, was impressive in beating Carmel and Montini, Lockport lost rather handily to Downers Grove North and Plainfield North. The Griffins won last year’s match-up 38-7.

NO. 1 BOLINGBROOK (2-0) at JOLIET CENTRAL (0-2)

Kickoff: 1 p.m. Saturday

Last week: Bolingbrook 46, Romeoville 10; Reavis 7, Joliet Central 6

The breakdown: Bolingbrook is riding high so far and figures to continue along that path as the SouthWest Suburban Blue season opens. The Steelmen, searching for their first victory since the return to separate programs, had Sylvester Bellamy’s 80-yard run and Carlos Curry’s 61-yard pass to Corvasie Weaver erased on penalties last week at Reavis.

NO. 3 PROVIDENCE (2-0) at ST. LAURENCE (1-1)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Providence 28, Minooka 10; St. Laurence 32, Hubbard 31

The breakdown: Providence attempts to build off its early momentum as it completes preparation for the Catholic Blue portion of the schedule. The Celtics have beaten Joliet Catholic and Minooka with Dominic Lagone impressing in his first two games at quarterback. Against Minooka, he was 9-of-11 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 69 yards in 13 carries and a TD.

THORNRIDGE (0-2) at LINCOLN-WAY WEST (1-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Last week: T.F. North 18, Thornridge 8; Lincoln-Way West 27, Lincoln-Way Central 9

The breakdown: Lincoln-Way West’s quest to repeat as SouthWest Suburban Red champion begins with a match-up against one of the conference’s bottom feeders. The Warriors scored the first victory for Dave Ernst as a head coach last week against Lincoln-Way Central behind a strong defensive effort. West limited the Knights to minus-9 yards and no first downs in the second half.

LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL (1-1) at H-F (2-0)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Lincoln-Way West 27, Lincoln-Way Central 9; H-F 35, Stevenson 27

The breakdown: Lincoln-Way Central gets away from in-district games for the first time and opens the SouthWest Suburban Blue schedule with a difficult opponent. Homewood-Flossmoor has looked good in victories over Marian and Stevenson, while Central is hoping to bounce back from last week’s loss to Lincoln-Way West.

GENESEO (2-0) at NO. 6 MORRIS (2-0)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Geneseo 40, Raby 20; Morris 15, Richards 13

The breakdown: There was nothing easy about it, but Morris has opened some eyes with nonconference victories over Minooka and Richards. Now the Redskins test Geneseo in Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover. Though unbeaten, the Maple Leafs have not played the same caliber of competition the Redskins have faced. RB/LB Jeff Perry is a two-way leader for Morris.
