Kelly, a junior, finished 41st at state last season in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Nine swimmers advanced to state in your sectional race last year. Cool swimming in such a fast race?

I knew most of my competitors going in, and I’d seen them swim at different points throughout the season. I knew what I was going to have to do to be able to qualify and keep up.

Is it tough swimming as a co-op instead of one school?

It’s really tough because the sport doesn’t get a lot of recognition at our schools. A lot of people don’t even realize we have a team because it is all the schools put together.

Describe the state meet.

It’s the most nerve-racking meet I’ve ever been to in my entire life. It’s crazy. I listen to music, get away, and I just find a quiet spot and sit.

Goals for this season?

Individually I’d like to return to state in the 100-yard breaststroke. I’d also like my team to qualify in the 200-yard medley relay this year.

Having competed at state, is it easier to train knowing where you want to end up?

Yes and no. I wasn’t happy with my performance last year so it was good motivation to do even better. I worked a lot harder so I can place higher at state.

You’re on a deserted island and can never run out of one food. What do you pick?

Bread is my favorite food out of everything. I love carbs.

Ever been told you look like someone famous?

At practice, one of the girls said I look like Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin. I took that as an honor.

Who is your celebrity prom date?

Probably Johnny Depp. He’s a pretty cool actor.

As told to Tim O’Brien
