In a meet that included nine teams from last year’s Class 3A final, Plainfield South’s Dan Lathrop proved Saturday at the Lockport Invitational that he belongs among the elite.

Lathrop covered the Dellwood Park course in 15 minutes, 54 seconds to take second among 205 runners to Downers Grove North’s Zack Smith (15:37).

“It got out really fast, mile one was around 4:50 or so,’’ Lathrop said. “The second mile the kid from Downers Grove North started pulling away a little. He just lengthened his lead. I gave him too much room.

“I had a good finish. I just wanted to be a little bit closer by the finish.’’

Lathrop, a junior, led Plainfield South (150) to fourth place among 24 teams, highest among Joliet-area schools. Lyons (58) won the team title ahead of runner-up Neuqua Valley (100) and third-place Hinsdale Central (128).

“Dan has a passion for running,’’ Plainfield South coach Jason Crowe said. “You can tell that every practice, he works hard. He had an awesome summer, put in his miles. Second today against this competition is huge.

“We have a couple seniors that should be right up there with him. They need to work with him in practice and stay with him and it will translate to the meets.’’

Plainfield South’s top finishers also included Gabe Calvillo (30th, 16:37), Misael Tobias (32nd, 16:38), Jake Fitzgerald (42nd, 16:53) and Cody Dyer (44th, 16:55).

“We had two sets of two guys,’’ Lathrop said. “I think we finished allright. We didn’t have the pack that we normally have. It was a little more broken up today than usual.’’

Lincoln-Way Central (165) was seventh led by Chris Kaminski (12th, 16:15), Dru Rozewicki (19th, 16:27), Kevin Fabian (41st, 16:51), Joey Nelson (45th, 16:55) and Tommy Kolacki (48th, 16:57).

Plainfield East (259) finished ninth led by Joseph Suarez (9th, 16:09), Jake Runnion (23rd, 16:31), Cody Hughes (71st, 17:19), Harris Jordan (75th, 17:24) and Collin Warke (81st, 17:33).
