Sandburg tops Bolingbrook in OT

Sandburg’s Jim Hill got some puzzled looks when he came out to begin overtime at quarterback.
“(Bolingbrook players) were looking at me like ‘Who’s this guy?’ The ref asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I knew I could get the job done.”
On the first play of the extra session, Hill — who played sparingly in the game and is known for his running — hit Ryan Coghlan on a play-action pass for a 10-yard touchdown to lift visiting Sandburg to a 13-6 SouthWest Suburban Blue win.
“I saw (Coghlan) open and I hit him,” Hill said. “Game over. Eagles win.”
The game actually wasn’t over until Bolingbrook (5-2, 3-2) fumbled on its first offensive play of overtime and Adam Nash pounced on it to seal the victory for Sandburg (6-1, 4-1).
The Eagles held the Raiders, playing without injured star quarterback Aaron Bailey, to 185 yards of offense and won despite managing only 152 of their own.
Linebacker Omar Aqel, celebrating his birthday, had a sack and a fumble recovery for Sandburg and Brendan Conlon added an interception.
“This was one of the best birthday presents I’ve had,” Aqel said. “All of us on our ‘D’ are best friends and when we get rolling, it’s a great thing.”
Aqel’s fumble recovery at the Bolingbrook 14-yard line set up Lemonte Booker’s 2-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2 that tied the game at 6 with 9:47 left in regulation. The extra-point try was blocked.
Bolingbrook’s only score came on its second drive when quarterback Quincy Woods ran 20 yards to pay dirt after a 50-yard run by Omar Stover (17 carries, 97 yards).
The Raiders held Booker to 37 yards on 22 carries. Phillip Stevens had a fumble recovery for Bolingbrook.
Sean Leland was 14 of 20 passing for 95 yards for the Eagles.
“We’ve got to watch the film and see what went wrong,” Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow said. “We got overpowered and we just got whipped offensively.”
