High School/Local College Sports Roundup for Oct. 13, 2012

Girls Tennis

Joliet West co-op Sectional: Kelsey Forkin and Kat Samardzija won the doubles final in guiding Lockport (25) to a first-place finish over runner-up Providence (20) and third-place Joliet Catholic (19). Caroline Plecki added a third-place showing in singles for the champion Porters. Harley Hutchison, of Joliet Catholic, won the singles title by outlasting Joliet West co-op’s Caitlin Shea 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Angels also had the third-place winners in doubles, thanks to Alexis Bauer and Nina Bertino. Providence was led by the tandem of Maggie and Kelly Ruane, who were second in doubles play.

Downers Grove South Sectional: Bolingbrook’s Nneka Onyejiaka won the singles title by defeating Glenbard South’s Jenna Brambora 6-0, 6-1. The Raiders totaled 10 points in tying for fourth with Lemont.

Boys Soccer

Class 3A Joliet Central Regional

Lockport 3, Joliet West 1: Dan Michalik, Wojciech Iwan and Rafael Chavez netted goals for host Lockport (8-11-3) in the quarterfinal.

Class 3A Naperville North Regional

Plainfield North 3, Bolingbrook 0: Goals by James Thompson, Garrett Gathman and Andres Castellanos powered host Plainfield North (9-9-2) in the quarterfinal.

Girls Volleyball

Glenbard East Tournament: Top-ranked Joliet Catholic (28-6) defeated West Aurora 16-25, 25-19, 25-23 in the third-place match. Mallory Mangun totaled 65 assists, 25 digs and 13 blocks in three matches on the day for the Angels. Morgan Reardon (33 kills), Sarah Adler (32 digs, 20 service points) and Julia Shemaitis (22 kills, 19 service points) also starred for Joliet Catholic. No. 3 Providence (24-9) won its first two contests before losing to Rockton Hononegah 38-36, 22-25, 25-17 in the ninth-place match. No. 6 Lemont (21-12) finished 15th after beating Schaumburg 25-17, 25-23. Megan Litoborski had 89 assists over two days for the Indians, while Kelly Ferguson added 32 kills.

Lincoln-Way Central Tournament: No. 2 Lincoln-Way Central (26-7) completed an undefeated run by topping Champaign Centennial 31-29, 23-25, 25-16 in the championship. Kaitlyn Siadek provided 71 assists in three matches on the day for the Knights, who also received contributions from Amanda Dolan (20 kills, 26 blocks) and Morgan Commet (39 digs). No. 5 Lincoln-Way East (23-10) lost to Lincoln-Way North 25-21, 25-27, 25-23 in the third-place match.

Maine West Tournament: No. 4 Lockport (22-10) finished sixth after losing to Lake Zurich 25-23, 20-25, 25-17. Overall, the Porters went 3-2 in the weekend event.

Boys Cross Country

South Suburban Blue Meet: Runner-up Scott Matulik (16:16.44) and third-place finisher Aaron Oldanie (16:16.85) guided Lemont (32) to first place in the five-team invitational.

Girls Cross Country

South Suburban Blue Meet: Lemont (17) produced the top four runners in sweeping past runner-up Oak Forest (73) in the six-team event. Claire Gagen (19 minutes) crossed the finish line first, followed by teammates Jorie Dybcio (19:33), Victoria Salazar (19:36) and Amanda Ruban (19:46).

Girls Swimming

Tinley Park Invitational: Wins by Trisha Cavarrubia in the 100-yard backstroke (59.28 seconds) and Kelsie Hammac in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.54) powered Joliet Township co-op (274) to a second-place finish behind Tinley Park (326) in the seven-team meet.

Women’s Volleyball

Big Guns Classic: Jazzmyne Robbins notched 30 kills and Dana Wettergren totaled 49 digs in helping host St. Francis (25-5) defeat St. Ambrose (Iowa) 21-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-10 and Mount Mercy (Iowa) 25-17, 25-16, 25-17. Megan Mowery added 25 kills for the Saints, who went 4-0 in the weekend tournament.
