Boys Basketball: Minooka stops Plainfield South

Three different Minooka players grabbed the spotlight during its Southwest Prairie home game against Plainfield South on Friday.
Darrin Myers started things off, Adam Holstine kept it going and Jake Hogen finished off a 53-42 victory that pushed the No. 4 Indians to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the SPC.
Plainfield South fell to 2-8, 1-2.
“It was nice to see us shoot the ball really well because this was one of our worst games of the year,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “Credit Plainfield South for taking us out of what we wanted to do.”
Myers scored 10 of his 11 points in the first quarter. The senior guard hit three three-pointers in the first period, which was tied 14-all after eight minutes.
With the game tied at 27, Holstine buried back-to-back three-pointers to close the first half, giving the hosts a 33-27 lead they would not relinquish.
Holstine scored all of his 11 points in the second quarter.
In the second half, Hogen took command, scoring eight of his 10 points.
“Myers got hot in the first half, we held Jake Hogen to 10 points, and I thought we played pretty good defense the entire night,” first-year Plainfield South coach Tim Boe said. “We’re taking steps and showing progress. But we can’t be satisfied.”
Plainfield South’s Shawn Goff scored five straight points midway through the fourth quarter, cutting the Minooka lead to 44-40. That was as close as the visitors would get.
Corey Evers led the Cougars with 12 points and Marcus Snowden added 11.
Minooka made 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, most of those coming in the fourth quarter.
“We’re trying to work on that and get better and we did better tonight,” Tanaka said.
“Whenever you get free points in a game, you have to take advantage of them.”
