Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost likes to point out his team is more than 6-foot-8 senior Ben Moore.Friday night, the Raiders proved their coach correct in a key SouthWest Suburban Blue game.
Despite blowing a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, Bolingbrook held on for a 50-48 victory over visiting Homewood-Flossmoor, with guard Prentiss Nixon and center Kenneth Williams combining for 36 points.
Nixon hit three long-range shots, scored on transition and maneuvered inside for a couple of layups to finish with 20 points. The bulky Williams was a force inside and hit a couple of jumpers to total 16 points.
“Prentiss and K.W. played very well, and (so did) C.J. (Redmond) from the point spot,’’ Brost said. “Whenever you get contributions from all your players, particularly like we got (Friday night), we’re going to be tough to beat.’’
“We’ve got a lot of people who step up and make plays in big-time situations,’’ Nixon said. “It’s always a battle against H-F. I don’t like to lose to H-F. I know they don’t like to lose to Bolingbrook.’’
No. 2 Bolingbrook (11-3, 3-1) came out on top after Redmond rebounded an H-F miss and lofted a pass to Kendall Guyton, who scored a transition layup to regain the lead 50-48 with four seconds left.
Moore (6 points, 10 rebounds) fouled out with three minutes to play. The Raiders felt his loss.
“We just need to keep our composure a little bit more, which we will,’’ Brost said. “This is the best team we’ve beaten this year to this point.’’
H-F (10-3, 3-1) rallied from a 43-30 deficit with 6 minutes, 40 seconds left to tie the game at 48 on two free throws by Lamar Wofford-Humphrey (10 points) with 2:12 to play. Rashaan Surles (11 points) sparked the fourth-quarter rally with three three-pointers.
“Comebacks are great, but you’ve got to prepare to win before the game,’’ H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said. “That’s the way we’re supposed to play all the time. That’s how we got to 10-0.’’
Maurius Hill led H-F with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
