Joliet Pride schedules basketball tryouts

Dwight has announced the Class of 2013 for the newly formed Dwight Athletic Hall of Fame.
The inductees include Art Mathisen (1939, football, basketball), Kenny Olson (1940, football, basketball), Gary Marx (1963, football, wrestling), Jim Finley (1964, football), Brad Verdun (1980, football, basketball, track) Katy Koonz (1991, track), the 1939 state-qualifying boys basketball team and the 1980 state championship golf team.
The class of 2013 was voted on by a group of Dwight administrators, coaches, community members and alumni representing the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. More than 30 nominations were reviewed.
A small induction reception is scheduled in the school cafeteria at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 1. Teams and individuals will be introduced that night between the sophomore and varsity boys basketball games against Herscher.

Joliet Pride tryouts
The Joliet Pride Travel Basketball organization will host tryouts for boys basketball players interested in improving their skill development through participation in structured practices and competitive game experiences.
Tryouts are scheduled for Sunday and Jan. 26 at Joliet West High School. Grades 3 to 5 try out from 1 to 3 p.m. and grades 6 to7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The season will run Feb. 6 through July 22. Teams will practice twice each week at Joliet West.

IHSBCA clinic
Longtime major league manager Tony La Russa will be the headline speaker at the annual IHSBCA clinic, which is scheduled for Jan. 25 to 26 at the Westin Lombard. La Russa will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday. The clinic runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Joliet West baseball camp
The Joliet West winter youth baseball camp for players ages 5-14 is scheduled for five Saturdays — Feb. 9 and 16 and March 2, 9 and 16 — at the school fieldhouse.
Sessions for individuals will begin at 5 p.m. The cost is $100 for the five weeks.

Mendez promoted
Plainfield Central graduate Mike Mendez has been promoted from interim head coach to head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs at McKendree University.
