Boys Bowling: Lockport, Minooka finish 1-2 in sectional

Lockport coach Jeff Wyatt is a veteran of those free-for-all local sectionals, so he knew what his Porters were facing entering Saturday’s Plainfield North Sectional at AMF Bolingbrook Lanes.
“We came here knowing there were six other teams — at least six — that on a given day would be tough to beat,” he said. “So our goal was to stay close to that group, and we figured we would have a chance.”
The Porters stayed close — and then some. They rolled a 6,317 total for six games, a 210.6 average per man per game, to edge Minooka (6,268) by 49 pins for the sectional title.
Both teams advance to next weekend’s state tournament at O’Fallon. Plainfield Central (6,186) was the hard-luck third-place finisher, with the Wildcats’ only sub-1,000 games coming in the last two. Lincoln-Way West, Bolingbrook and Romeoville claimed the fourth through sixth spots, with Plainfield North, Plainfield East, Joliet West, Plainfield South and Joliet Central further down the list.
Minooka featured sectional champion Zach Segatto, who posted three-game series of 701 and 710 and averaged 235.2. He outdueled Plainfield Central’s Bryan Blair, who finished second at 1,394, a 232.3 average.
Blair gets one of the automatic qualifying spots for the state tournament and Lincoln-Way West’s Josh Glover (1,344, 224.0 average) claimed the other. Six at-large bids statewide also will be awarded. Bolingbrook’s Gio Montecinos and Plainfield Central’s Ray Ciangiola, each of whom shot 1,322, will be in contention.
Lockport, the state runner-up in 2009, is a qualifier for the sixth time thanks to balance. The Porters’ averages were Jonny Kamba 219.7, Brian Hodolitz 219.5, Alex Wilmsen 209.2, Shane Matejcak 208.5 and David Wysocki 196.0. All are seniors.
“We’re ecstatic,” Kamba said. “It’s the first time going to state for most of us. Everyone had a low game, but we picked each other up. Plus, we had such a great following here. It was a sea of maroon.”
Minooka coach Derrick Rapsky said it would have been “disappointing had we not gone to state with this group, and Zach has been the big dog all season.”
John Kauffman averaged 213.2, Justin Shepard 206.3 and Dylan Pickett 197.2 for the Indians. Chris Dombrowski joined the lineup in Game 3 and averaged 200.8 for the final four games.
“Chris was huge,” Rapsky said. “I might make him (Saturday’s) MVP.”
