Twelve area cheerleading teams heading to state

Twelve cheerleading teams from the Joliet area, including four sectional champions, will compete this weekend in the IHSA state competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
The competition will begin Friday, with the 10 finalists in each division moving on to the finals Saturday.
Providence won the Large Team division at Mahomet-Seymour with a 93.77 score. Also at Mahomet, Morris (87.67) was the Medium Team winner while Bolingbrook (91.80) claimed the Co-Ed Team title. Dwight (88.53) was the Small Team champion at Riverside-Brookfield.
Other area placers at Mahomet-Seymour were Lincoln-Way East (91.67), second in Large Team, and Plainfield South (89.57), fifth in Large Team.
At Riverside-Brookfield, Wilmington (85.67) was second and Reed-Custer (83.77) fourth in Small Team. Joliet West (91.70) was third and Lockport (91.53) fourth in Large Team, while Lemont (85.03) took third and Lincoln-Way West (84.40) fourth in Medium Team.
To celebrate the team’s success, the Joliet West cheerleaders will perform at 4:45 p.m. Thursday in the small gym at the school. The performance is free and open to the public. In addition, a send-off parade is planned for 9:30 a.m. Friday and will include the West marching band and flag corps.
West also is planning a fan bus for students. Permission forms can be picked up in the West athletic office and are due by noon Thursday.
