Q-and-A with Hayden Witt, Lincoln-Way West basketball

Lincoln-Way West may be 2-20 entering the week, but for Witt, a 6-foot-4 junior guard/forward, the goal is to win at least 10 games this season. Witt, who acknowledged this season’s Warriors are young (the school has been in existence since 2009), is among the top five Joliet-area players in scoring with an 18.4 points-per-game average.
What’s it like playing at a school that hasn’t been around for more than five or 10 years?
We want to create a good base for our organization, and we have young kids who want to come out and play.
Do you play any other sport at Lincoln-Way West?
I played baseball my freshman year, but I quit to play AAU basketball.
Was it hard to decide on one over the other?
No, I really like basketball, and that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve played since first or second grade. My dad played and I was always tall, so I just decided to keep playing.
Do you see yourself playing college basketball or is this it?
I definitely want to play college basketball. There’s just a couple small Division I and Division II schools that have shown interest.
If you had the athletic ability to play any sport, what would it be?
Gymnastics. It looks cool watching those guys flip on TV and I had watched it on the Olympics. I was always big and not very flexible, so I never tried.
Is there a hidden talent you have?
No. Everyone pretty much already knows everything.
When you were a kid, what was the goofiest thing you wanted to be when you grew up?
An ice cream truck driver. And then my parents said, “You should have better goals than that.”
