Smith recovered from a fractured bone in his back that sidelined him junior year to swim this season and win the 50-yard freestyle at the SouthWest Suburban Blue meet.
How is your back?
No problems so far, which has been a very good thing. It was a relief knowing I could get back in the water and not miss my senior year.
What’s your best event?
The 100 freestyle. I like the sprinting part, but you also have to strategically swim it. You can’t just go all out.
What did you think of the Olympic swimmers?
The best thing I enjoyed was to see the United States come together and swim as a team. It was motivational.
Have you decided on a college?
My top choice is Clemson. I’m also looking at St. Louis University, Washington and Creighton, for the medical field.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Garrett Hedlund from “Tron”. He seems like a nice guy.
Who would be your celebrity prom date?
Selena Gomez. I find her attractive.
Who’s the one person, living or deceased, you’d like to meet?
Paul Newman. He has a salad dressing that the funds go toward a cancer cure. Since I’m going into the medical field, I find that incredible.
Favorite music?
I listen to country, rock, rap, whatever mood I’m feeling.
Favorite team?
The White Sox. I’ve always been a baseball fan.
Most embarrassing sports moment?
One time I had goggles on my head, but I didn’t put them over my eyes. An outdoor pool, sun in my eyes, it was a mess.
What will you remember about high school?
All the support and dedication from my parents and teachers. It’s nice to know people back you up and believe in you.
