Plano took advantage of several missed free-throw attempts by Coal City, making 5-of-7 free throws of its own over the final 53 seconds of overtime to outduel the host Coalers 55-52 in Interstate-Eight play Friday night.
“It was a fun game,” Plano coach Brett Moore said. “A couple of bang-bang plays at the end, but we ended up on top at the end and got the win and won the conference.”
Elijah Wallace led Plano (20-9, 10-1) with 14 points on 6-of-21 shooting while teammate Udo Agomo added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jon West led the Coalers with a game-high 19 points, while teammates Nick Peters and Joe Micetich added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wallace’s putback tied the game at 46 with 1:15 left in regulation. Coal City’s Brennen Shetina made a jumper with 8.4 seconds left but the basket was waved off after Shetina was called for an offensive foul.
In overtime, a Wallace jumper followed by an Agomo putback gave the Reapers a 50-46 lead with 1:30 remaining.
Coal City (16-12, 6-5) got to within 52-49 on a Micetich bucket with 23.9 seconds left but Agomo connected on 3-of-4 free throws in the final seconds.
“I just blocked out everything and did what I do in practice,” Agomo said of his free throws.
“We just didn’t execute the way we would have liked at the end of regulation and in overtime,” Coal City coach Brad Boresi said.
