IESA Wrestling: Homer boasts three champs, wins state title

Homer Junior High School not only won the IESA State Wrestling Tournament last weekend at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center in DeKalb, the Mustangs ran away with it.

Homer had three champions and seven medalists in accumulating 202 points to 129 for runner-up O’Fallon Carriel. Deerfield Caruso was third with 99 and Troy finished fourth with 92. No other local schools cracked the top 10.

Abdullah Assaf won the title at 90 pounds, Baylor Fernandes was the champion at 95, and Trevell Timmons won at 126 to lead the way for Homer, which is coached by Chris Carlson. Jake Cook (65) and Matt Kronsbein (75) finished second for the Mustangs, who were strong in the lower weights. Dalton Dwyer (80) was fourth and Joey Flabo (90) took fifth.

Cook lost his title match at 65 pounds to Peotone’s Paul Keane. Alex Friddle of Coal City was the champion at 70.

Troy had two champions — Austin Poch winning at 85 and Patrick Leaf at 275 — giving the Joliet area seven champions.

Other area medalists included Pocholo Jubas (Romeoville Lukancic), second at 112; Jerad Price (Channahon), second at 185 after dropping a 4-2 overtime decision in the final; Isaiah Hill (Minooka), third at 112; Owen Weaver (Wilmington), third at 135; Cody Hoshell (Troy), fourth at 70; Eddie Wilkins (Reed-Custer), fourth at 275; Ryan Wasielewski (Coal City), fifth at 85, and Jake Bugajski (Channahon), sixth at 95.
