Football: Plainfield East trims Metea Valley 37-17

The Plainfield East defense intercepted Mustangs quarterbacks four times, with Donte Hartsfield returning one 60 yards for a touchdown with 5:15 remaining in the game.
Metea Valley (0-1) led 7-0 after a 1-yard score by Jay Parker. Plainfield East (1-0) tied the game at 7-7 on the very next offensive play as quarterback Cole Kotopka (7-of-14, 193 yards, 2 TDs) connected with Brandon Rivera for an 80-yard touchdown with 10:23 remaining in the first half.
Bengals running back Jake Mayon hurt the Mustangs both on the ground (12 carries, 107 yards, TD) and catching the ball (1 catch for 35 yards, TD). Rivera added three catches for 128 yards.
BY THE NUMBERS
Metea Valley outgained Plainfield East 339-289. However, the Mustangs turned the ball over five times and committed seven penalties. Metea Valley wide receiver Nick Dodson had eight catches for 94 yards.
