Plainfield East 35, West Aurora 12
Plainfield East pulled away from West Aurora with a balanced offense. Strong-armed junior quarterback Cole Kotopka gave an early indication that he would be working a lot through the air by throwing passes on East’s first six plays. On the ground, Jake Mayon led the Bengal attack off the spread offense that gained 201 yards on 20 carries. Kotopka’s 198 yards passing gave Plainfield East 399 yards of total offense, to West Aurora’s 260.
West Aurora had scored the game’s first touchdown with 2:29 left in the half on a wide-receiver screen from Quintez Jones that Jonathon Doyle turned into a 45-yard score. But the Bengals responded with three touchdowns in a span of 1:24 to grab control. Kotopka hit Mayon for a16-yard touchdown on a screen pass. Then Plainfield East took advantage of a Blackhawk personal foul penalty and opted for an onside kick, recovering the ball at the West 29. On the next play, Kotopka hooked up with Feras Hleihel for a touchdown just before the intermission. Mayon completed the scoring barrage with a 74-yard scoring scamper on the first play of the second half.
Mayon ran for 147 yards on 14 carries, and 127 of those yards came in the second half. He also caught two passes for 30 yards.
BY THE NUMBERS
Kotopka was 15 of 28 for 198 yards and three touchdowns, and he added a late score on the ground. Quarterback Quintez Jones rushed for 63 yards on 20 carries for the Blackhawks. He completed 10 of 23 passes for 124 yards, but was intercepted three times. Jones scored the other West touchdown on a 15-yard keeper in the third quarter.
