Lincoln-Way East 17, Lincoln-Way Central 12
Host East almost died, but ultimately lived by the special teams sword. The Griffins overcame two fumbles on punt returns with a blocked punt that led to a field goal, and a 91-yard kickoff return by Marcus Cosby.
Nothing was going right for the Griffins, who trailed 6-0 with a minute remaining in the first half when Zach Hoffman blocked a punt that was recovered at the Central 15. Anthony Sciarini booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired.
Brian Casey rushed 11 times for 72 yards for East, although Cosby was the game-changer. Central had 121 yards worth of offense, 84 of which came via passing yards by quarterback Cale Hayes.
BY THE NUMBERS
Two fumbles on rushes and two on punt returns makes 10 in all for East in two games. It was the 13th straight win for East over Central.
“I was just trying to get us some momentum. I was looking straight in the middle to where the gap was, and I just took it.” — Cosby
