St. Francis (1-0) at Lindenwood-Belleville (2-0)
When: 1 p.m. Saturday at Lindenwood Stadium, Belleville, Ill.
Coaches: Joe Curry, St. Francis 7-5; Jeff Fisher, Lindenwood University, 6-6.
Last Year: First meeting.
St. Francis preview: Hidden in relative obscurity during a 43-26 season-opening road win over Olivet Nazarene was a plethora of mistakes the Saints will have to clean up if they are to get back to the NAIA playoffs. The miscues included 13 penalties, a turnover directly leading to a score and three missed touchdown conversions. ... Also lost was a pretty solid defensive effort. Take away a 61-yard touchdown run and the Saints’ defense allowed 2.7 yards per play and just 3 of 12 third-down conversions. “They are 2-0 and it’ll be a nice challenge,” Curry said. “It will be a tough challenge for us, but if we do the things we’re capable of, we’ll be fine.” ... QB E.J. White was named the NAIA Player of the Week after compiling 524 yards of offense and six touchdowns. He needs 58 rushing yards to become the school’s career leader. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, especially with the new stadium they have,” White said. “They are 2-0 and think they can win every game this year, as well they should. But, from game one to game two is when you make the most improvement, so I’m excited.”
Lindenwood preview: Like St. Francis, Lindenwood is under a second-year coach in Fisher, who has guided the Lynx to a pair of wins to start itssecond season of football at the school. ... The talk hasn’t been as much about what’s happening on the field as it’s been about the field at Lindenwood. Lindenwood Stadium features a maroon-and-white striped FieldTurf as part of massive renovations, which were completed in 2012. ... On the field, RB Kam Harris earned Association of Independent Player of the Week honors. The sophomore rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-16 victory over Central Methodist. For the season, Harris has 45 carries for 33 yards and four touchdowns. ... QB Kerry Gibson has completed 21-of-46 passes for 323 yards and three scores for the Lynx, who are averaging 35.5 points per game.
Next week: USF finishes its season-opening three-game road trip at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Trinity International in Deerfield.
