Plainfield North played like it was late for prom Wednesday at the Wheaton Classic.
It was by design.
The Tigers (15-1) zipped past Naperville Central 25-19, 25-22 in about 37 minutes and then took down Downers Grove South 25-17, 25-18 in less time than it takes to watch the 10 o’clock news to reach the Gold Division quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Kate Federico had 27 assists, Dakota Santore had 13 kills, Lauren Robeck added four kills and Kaitlyn Fisher had four kills and four blocks as Plainfield North overcame a 22-20 deficit in Set 2 to edge Naperville Central.
“We love a fast tempo,” Federico said. “That’s how we run everything. When we’re slow, we don’t do so hot. When we’re playing teams that we could take advantage of, we normally play down to their level. But when we play fast and it’s at our tempo, then it’s our game.”
Plainfield North was back on the court a few minutes after beating Naperville Central, and the Tigers showed little fatigue against Downers Grove South. Plainfield North pulled away from an early tie behind Santore’s nine kills, Fisher’s seven putaways and Federico’s 25 assists, four aces and three kills.
“It gets pretty tiring, but we train for it,” Federico said. “Every practice is fast tempo, so when we’re not going fast, that’s when we’re not playing like ourselves.”
Plainfield North will face Waubonsie Valley (13-1) in a Gold quarterfinal.
“It just shows the direction the program is going,” said Plainfield North coach Tracey Marshall, who is taking the Tigers to the Gold bracket for the first time in her four years at the school. “I knew it was going to take three, four years to make a turnaround. It feels good to see the fruits of your labor manifesting themselves.
“But I don’t want to stop there,” she added. “I want a state championship. That’s my sight, getting the program to that level. That’s our goal.”
Six-foot-2 Phoebe Havenaar had six kills, Alex O’Brien added four kills and Andi Davenport had 12 assists for Naperville Central in the loss to Plainfield North.
Also advancing to Gold bracket play Saturday were Marist (5-2), which beat Prairie Ridge 25-17, 25-16 and Wheaton Warrenville South 25-18, 25-23, and Sandburg (8-3), which defeated Neuqua Valley 25-22, 25-21 and Wheaton Academy 25-13, 25-11.
Waubonsie Valley scored the last eight points in Set 1 to beat Glenbrook South 25-21, 25-15 after stopping Lemont 25-22, 25-17.
