On Homecoming night, Sandburg (4-1, 3-0) throttled Joliet Central (0-4, 0-3) to remain unbeaten in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. The Eagles didn’t allow the Steelmen to even reach the red zone in the game.
Sandburg scored 37 points in the first two quarters to put the game out of reach at halftime. It was a rapid-fire offense at one point in the second quarter as the Eagles scored a touchdown in six seconds on a 33-yard pass from quarterback Sean Leland to wide receiver Pavlos Marudas to go up 28-0.
Leland was a big part of the Eagles’ onslaught in the first half, completing 6-of-8 passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns.
BY THE NUMBERS
Joliet Central’s offense struggled all night against the Eagles and totaled just 47 yards. Sandburg generated 269 total yards. With eight players involved in the running game, the majority of the Eagles’ offense came on the ground as Sandburg rushed for 157 yards.
“It was a total team effort. We were not dependent on one player. We came together as a group. We depended on each other.” — Sandburg coach Dave Wierzal
