Oswego jumped out to a 21-point lead and held off a tough Plainfield South squad to pick up a 35-28 Southwest Prairie Conference win. The win clinched a playoff berth and was the Panthers’ 20th straight SPC win.
Plainfield South (5-3 overall, 4-2) withstood a 21-point deficit in the first half and had the momentum in the third quarter until Oswego’s Tyler Walsh picked off a pass and took it 42 yards for a touchdown with 6:04 left in the third. That wound up being the difference.
Walsh scored TDs three different ways. In addition to his 42-yard interception return, he caught a 70-yard TD pass from Steven Frank and rushed for 94 yards on 24 carries with a score.
BY THE NUMBERS
Plainfield South senior Josh Harris rushed for 144 yards on 22 carries, including a 66-yard TD. He also caught a 20-yard scoring pass. Oswego’s Peter Laughlin had three sacks defensively.
“I’m proud of our guys for hanging with it. We never intended for the game to be that close, but then again, Plainfield South has athletes and they’re good at what they do. I’m glad we came out on top.” — Oswego coach Brian Cooney
