Peotone won its first playoff game in 10 years by beating visiting Pontiac 49-0 in the first round of the 4A playoffs. The Blue Devils (8-2) will travel to either Quincy Notre Dame or Coal City for Round 2.
THE TURNING POINT
The Blue Devils led 12-0 early in the second quarter. Pontiac (6-4) had it first-and-goal at the 6-yard line but could not score. The Indians would not get any closer the rest of the game.
Peotone running back Jake Rapson scored two rushing touchdowns, intercepted a pass and recovered a blocked punt. Joey Janutis returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown. Peotone quarterback Brandon Wenzel threw three TD passes.
BY THE NUMBERS
Peotone outgained Pontiac 341-141 in total yards.
“The offensive linemen were always hitting their guys and driving them off the ball. There were always running lanes.” — Rapson.
“The kids followed the game plan to a T. They bent, but they didn’t break. It was 12-0. If they score, it’s 12-7 and it’s a different game. It was an excellent goal-line stand. I think that was the turning point in the game.” — Peotone coach Jason Spang
