To have a chance to win the Southwest Prairie Conference title this year, Plainfield South’s boys golf team had to come out on top Wednesday against Plainfield North, which previously was unbeaten in conference dual meets.

Plainfield South handled the pressure with a 169-176 victory as Matt Ward and Todd McGuire were co-medalists with 5-over 41s at Whitetail Ridge in Yorkville. Jerry Estes shot 43 and John Smith 44 for the Cougars.

“They knew what we had to do,’’ South coach Tim Boe said of his team. “For them to know that and still come out and play against a team like Plainfield North, that’s pretty good.’’

Ward had medaled alone in every conference match this season. A triple-bogey on the par-5 546-yard second hole helped open the door for McGuire.

“Besides one hole, it wasn’t bad,’’ Ward said. “One bad drive out of bounds and one bad decision. They add up. I had a couple drives that weren’t too good, but I recovered from there.’’

McGuire, whom Boe said played his best nine-hole match of the year, realized what he accomplished by tying Ward.

“It feels good because he usually is the one to try and beat or try to do just as good as,’’ McGuire said. “It’s a good accomplishment to tie him.’’

“It wasn’t an easy day on the course,’’ Boe said. “When they started it was cold and windy and wet, so the course was playing slow.’’

Slow or fast, Ward has been the leader all season for South (6-3, 5-2).

“Absolutely, absolutely,’’ Boe said. “This is the first match he’s had in conference that anybody tied him. He’s medaled in every conference match. I’ve never had that before; I’ve never seen another player do that before in the conference. He’s been playing unbelievable.’’

“It’s just been pretty consistent,’’ Ward said. “I’ve been putting pretty well. The shots have been pretty consistent. I just need to continue doing the same thing.’’

North (6-2, 4-1) was led by Caleb Kissel (42), Taylor Hollingshaus (43), Jack Rante (45) and Corey Evak (46). The Tigers have only one senior on the varsity roster.

“It’s been going well up until tonight,’’ North coach Brad Shinovich said. “It’s been a promising season. Coming into tonight we had high expectations. Unfortunately, the guys didn’t play real well. We’re disappointed in that. All we can do is regroup.’’

Plainfield Central 157, Romeoville 182: Medalist Mitch Young shot an even-par 36 for Plainfield Central at Prairie Bluff. Bobby Leach (43) was the top golfer for Romeoville in the Southwest Prairie.

Oswego 150, Plainfield East 171: Jake Kaufman shot a team-best 38 for Plainfield East in the Southwest Prairie dual at The Links of Carillon. Matt Anderson, of Oswego, was the medalist after carding a 34.

In the team standings, Lincoln-Way West won via a tiebreaker over Joliet Township co-op after each carded a 163, Crete-Monee (196) was third.
