Auto racing: Joliet’s Anderson secures STARS season title

Joliet’s Jimmy Anderson was unable to hold off California native Tanner Swanson in the last GMC STARS race of the season at Grundy County Speedway, but he came away with the circuit’s points championship.
After spinning early in the race, Swanson charged past Anderson with eight laps to go to win the Alex Pruett Memorial. Anderson, Billy Hulbert, points runner-up Brad Greenup and Tom Schnabel completed the top five. Tanner Swanson was the fast qualifier. Schnabel won the Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash with Terry Ahern and Hulbert taking heat races.
Anderson became the inaugural winner of the MiJack Cup that goes to the series points champion. He started the event with an 83-point lead over Brad Greenup and closed 111 points ahead en route to his second career title. He posted four wins with two runner-ups and a third. The owner’s title is the fifth for Sharon Anderson, co-owner with Bob Guess, having Don Carter Jr.(’78, ’92, and ’94) and son Jimmy (’08, ’11) as the pilots.
Jeff Slayton, a regular from the Michigan Classic Racers Group, won the feature and had the fast time in The Tool Store classic modifieds. Mike Anderson won the Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash. Series champion Ed Ensor led most of the feature until Slayton took over on lap 16 and led the remainder of the 20-lap main. Following Slayton were Ensor, Greg Ihrke, Mike Anderson with Sam Shew.
Andy Jones, the 2011 champion, was the fast qualifier, heat winner and fifth-time feature winner in the Town & Country Lanes Legends Series.
Chris King edged the champion by .097 seconds in the Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash.
Jones, King, Anthony Metallo, Brian Tedeschi and Tommy Jones were the top five.
Illinois state champion Tony Valez found victory lane in the STARS/CSR Mini Cups. He beat Jamie Domski, Jaret James, Zach Newland and Joshua James in the 16-lap main. Morgan Baird was fast qualifier and heat winner.
College football
Allen, Tonini cited: The University of St. Francis jumped five spots to No. 19 in the NAIA national rankings and two local players earned Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League Player of the Week honors after last week’s 69-3 rout of Olivet Nazarene. Cited were sophomore wide receiver/kick returner Elliot Allen from Minooka and junior linebacker Adam Tondini from Morris. Allen, the special teams player of the week, set a school record with his 89-yard punt return for a touchdown. Tondini finished with a team-high 11 tackles, including three for loss (11 yards) and one sack of five yards. He also recovered a fumble.
Women’s golf
USF third: St. Francis finished nine shots off the pace and placed third at the 10-team Elmhurst Bluejay Invite. Saints junior Kali Hale from Joliet Township shot 87 and tied for seventh among 67 players. Maricar Nones and Maggie Rich shot 88. Rachael Anderson from Plainfield South had 89 and Ashleigh Offerman from Joliet Catholic 91.
Men’s soccer
USF 8, Benedictine 0: St. Francis (4-2-1) got two goals from Diego Herrera and freshman Juan Mascote from Joliet Township and snapped a two-game losing streak. Christian Ontiveros from Bolingbrook, Ulises Ornelas from Joliet and Ricky Navarro from Plainfield North also scored.
Women’s soccer
St. Xavier 2, USF 1: sity of St. Francis outshot St. Xavier and controlled possession but lost the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both schools. USF (5-3-0, 0-1-0) got a goal from forward Brooke Polus
Women’s tennis
All-Lewis battle: After winning the doubles final at the ITA Midwest Regional, Lewis sophomores Zsofia Kranczicki and Zsofia Lanstiak faced off in the singles final at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex, with Kranczicki winning 6-2, 6-2. The duo now will play in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 13-16 in Mobile, Ala. .
Women’s volleyball
Trinity 15-25-26-25, USF 25-13-24-22: St. Francis won the first set but could not keep the momentum as defending Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference co-champion Trinity Christian beat the Saints at the Sullivan Center. Trinity (9-3, 4-0) is the lone team unbeaten in CCAC play. USF (10-6, 3-1) lost for the third straight time over two seasons to the Trolls. USF outside hitter Jazzmyne Robbins had 18 kills and a .384 attacking percentage. Opposite Sarah Ahline from Lemont added 13 kills and Paige Reinert from Bolingbrook collected nine kills. Setter Ashley Richards from Wilmington added 49 assists. Ashley Thompson had 27 serve receptions and 15 digs.
USF 25-27-19-25, Roosevelt 18-25-25-21: Robbins collected 15 kills for USF.
Free basketball camp
Joliet Central fieldhouse: The Joliet Central boys/girls free basketball camp is scheduled Oct. 16 and Oct. 30 in the Joliet Central fieldhouse. The times are 10 a.m.-noon for K-5th and noon-2 p.m. for grades 6-8. Bring shorts, T-shirt and gym shoes. Local golf
Holes-in-one: Several holes-in-one were recently scored at Wedgewood. Dave Kettwig, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Joliet, aced the 162-yard eighth hole with a 6-iron. Witnesses were Ron Varley, Larry Preboy and Gil Elizondo. Les Arling, of Joliet, aced the 145-yard 17th with a 7-iron as Lou Vercelote and Dave Krakar witnessed. John Gabel, of Joliet, knocked in a 5-wood on the 213-yard 13th. Paul Strle, Gene Shea and George Long witnessed. Jeremy Williams, of Chicago, aced No. 17, playing at 160 yards, with a 9-iron as Felix Marasco, Marco Serrano and Fred Saffold witnessed. At Inwood, Jim Kallauskas, of Joliet, scored a hole-in-one on the 161-yard 12th hole, using a 6-iron. Jack McDonald, Phil Collura and Dave Au were witnesses.
Senior golf
Miller Lite Senior Tour #14: Bob Kerwin, Jim Klancher, Tom Bell and Dave Davisson won with 7-under-par 137. Larry Warren, John Wielgosz, Vaughn Whitfield and Bob Gleason were second at 143.
