Girls Basketball: Plainfield Central outlasts Lemont

Plainfield Central’s and Lemont’s girls basketball teams took those two words literally during the opening game of the Romeoville Thanksgiving Tournament Thursday in Romeoville.
The giving came in the form of too many turnovers to count.
Plainfield Central allowed one free throw over the final six minutes of a 38-34 victory.
“I don’t know if it was our pressure or not, but we took a little time away and they started to tighten up a little bit,” Central coach Mark Krusz said. “Our experience helped us at the end and it hurt them. It’s a win and that’s something for these girls to be happy about.”
The Wildcats’ Brigid Hanley, returning from her second ACL surgery, led all scorers with 18 points. Teammate Jessica Kaminski pulled down nine rebounds and had four steals.
Lauren Kulaga added 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and four steals.
Courtney Toth’s 17 points led Lemont, which took a 33-26 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter. It did not make a field goal the rest of the way.
“We had too many turnovers, we were sloppy and we didn’t put the ball in the basket,” Lemont coach Bill Bozue said. “I think we missed 14 free throws and we missed some layups. They are all correctable errors. We have a lot of inexperienced kids, so that’s the way it’s going to be.”
Alex Harrison’s putback with 4:44 to play in the game tied it at 33. Hanley’s three-point play with 1:27 left in the fourth gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 37-34.
Central led 20-14 late in the first quarter. It scored just two baskets over the next 12 minutes as Lemont built a 33-26 lead with six minutes left in the game.
Lockport 49 Rockford Guilford 33: Taylor Quain scored 16 points and Nicole Foresman chipped in 12 for the Porters, who allowed just four baskets in the first half. Lockport led 24-8 at halftime and 41-20 after three quarters.
No. 3 Romeoville 64, Joliet Central 30: Abby Smith contributed 16 points and eight steals to pace Romeoville in the season opener for both squads. Briana Harris (10 rebounds) and Kiera Currie added 13 points apiece for the Spartans.
